Cheap & Easy Halloween Costume Ideas

Do you know why we dress up on Halloween? It was believed that ghosts  would come back to the earthly world on the 31st October. So to avoid being recognised by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. To help you avoid being recognised by those scary ghosts I thought that I’d share my favourite cheap Halloween costume ideas!

Halloween costumes

The Zombie

The zombie is my go-to Halloween costume! What you’ll need: some black and white face paint (black for around your eyes and white for the rest of your face… and blood around your mouth if you’re a hungry zombie). For the rest of my outfit I usually cut holes into an old t-shirt & wear ripped jeans! Follow the link below for some zombie inspiration!

The Witch

The witch is another classic Halloween costume and it can be super a super easy look to pull off! What you’ll need: green face paint, a witches hat and black clothes. Need some inspiration? Follow the link below for witch costumes available on Amazon.

Harry Potter

HP has to be one of the post recognisable film characters in history! What you’ll need: a pair of (round) glasses, the signature scar, a wand, and something that vaguely resembles a school uniform. If you need some inspiration follow the link below for some Harry Potter costume options.

The Vampire

It’s a classic, and a cheap, easy costume option. What you’ll need: white face paint, some vampire teeth & fake blood.

Pop Art Character

This one is definitely for the art lovers! What you’ll need: face paint, creativity and a steady hand! When I’ve created a pop art look in the past I’ve just used eye liner (for the black outlines). You can find face paint (and accessories) specifically for pop art costumes following the link below.

Your Favourite Emoji

Depending on what your favourite emoji is (please not the aubergine), dressing up as an emoji could be relatively cheap and easy. What you’ll need: face paint? props? It completely depends on the emoji and your commitment to the cause! Even if you don’t want to dress up as an emoji I would highly recommend visiting the link below just to see how crazy all the emoji costumes are (credit to whoever came up with them *insert laughing emoji*)

A Minion

Dressing up as a minion is surprisingly simple. What you’ll need: a yellow t-shirt, denim dungarees and some goggle-like headwear!

A Pumpkin

If you’ve never dressed up as a pumpkin for Halloween then 2018 should be your year! The pumpkin is the classic symbol of Halloween. It’s also super easy to pull off without much money or effort! What you’ll need: A significant amount of orange paint, some black paint, and lots of orange clothes!

Super Man/Wonder Woman

Another classic (yet not very scary) Halloween costume. What you’ll need: a lot of blue, red and yellow. I’ve seen people wear blue tights and a cut out S on their chests before. If you need some super-hero themed inspiration, check out the link below.

The Ghost

Dressing up a ghost has to be the easiest and cheapest costume of them all! Whether you opt for the bed sheet, bin bag, or go all out with some white face paint, anyone can pull this look off in under 10 minutes!

I hope these cheap and easy costume ideas have helped you to decide who (or what) your going to be this Halloween! Please do let me know in the comments below which costume you decide on. I also have a list of places you can get free make up too!

  • I really enjoyed reading this! I’m visiting my family in the U.S and haven’t been here for Halloween in 7 years. They take it pretty seriously over here! I’m still undecided on my outfit but my hubs just read your post and says hesh definitely going with Harry Potter! X

  • Some great ideas. I love the pop art character! I’d never thought of that before! I am off to a wedding on Halloween this year so no dressing up for me (I don’t think a corpse bride costume would be appreciated somehow). It’s amazing what costumes you can make simply and quickly.

  • This is a great list of affordable costumes! I really never dress up but I’m really feeling the pumpkin idea this year!

    • I’m really feeling the pumpkin costume this year too! I knew my bright orange jumper would come in handy for something! 🎃

  • Right so, oh my god, I didn’t even know the story behind why we dress up! That means the ghosts are definitely going to get me this year – I’m stuck bed bound and ill for this week so I’ve had to cancel my plans! Haha, rest assured, the aubergine is definitely NOT my favourite emoji, deary me – I’m a big fan of the peach and the sleeping face with “zzz” because it’s a pretty accurate representation of my weekend routine! Wonderful post darl! xx

  • All such great ideas! I think I’d probably go for the pumpkin or the pop art character, those are definitely two of my favourites! I love Halloween but I just can’t justify spending so much money on one outfit only to just wear it for one night and keep it in the wardrobe for the next few years, it’s so sad! I thinks it’s a lot more fun to get creative and save money in the long term. Amazing ideas, I hope you have a fantastic Halloween! :)
