Save Money at the Cinema

Going to the cinema is one of my favourite cheap date nights! We manage to keep the cost down when we go so I thought that I’d share my money saving secrets with you…

Cinema Tickets

Make your own cinema

Claim your free trial of Netflix, Now TV, or Amazon Prime Video, fetch some microwavable popcorn, turn the lights off and get comfy on the settee in front of the TV! Looking to host your own cinema party? You could consider a Home Projector, and have an outdoor cinema! Not only will this save you money, but it’ll also save your friends and family money if you do host a film night at your house (or back garden).

Free Preview Screenings

Free Movies UK is a forum where film buffs share codes for free screening tickets. All you have to do is sign up to the forum and wait for codes to be posted, then apply for your ticket. Sign up to email alerts to you snap up tickets before they’re gone.

Find a code at FMUK, print out this code (it will act as your ticket), take your printed out code to the cinema – an usher will direct you to your screen, enjoy the film!

Book Online

The majority of cinema chains will offer you better prices if you book online. This also gives you a better opportunity to look out for deals!

Vue cinemas run ‘Super Mondays’ where all tickets are £3.99! To get your cheap ticket, you’ll need to activate your code online.

Vue Super Mondays

Student Discount

On average you’ll save you up to 20% on your ticket with a student discount. Plus there are multiple other benefits that come with holding a student card including a range of discounts at retailers and restaurants, discount travel & more. NUS extra & Unidays are my preferred student discount options!

Check out my student discount guide below to see all the best student discount programmes.

Meerkat Movies

2 for 1 cinema tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the entire year when you take out a policy with Comparethemarket!

Head to CompareTheMarket and take out a policy (there are some policies for under £3!). Then download the Meerket app (iOS or Android) and claim a new meerkat movies code every single week (you can combine this offer with your student card too!), they have just introduced “meerkat meals” where you can get 2 for 1 on a range of restaurant chains!

If I’m not using my meerkat movies code I’ll post it on my twitter for you to claim so make sure that you’re following me on there!

Tesco Clubcard

You can use your Tesco Clubcard points in exchange for vouchers at Cineworld Cinemas. If you have enough clubcard points, this can make your trip to the cinema completely free (you usually need to pay a booking fee of 50p per person). I’m a big fan of the Tesco Clubcard scheme as Tesco is my most convenient supermarket so I’d be spending there regardless. If you regularly shop at Tesco it’s an absolute must!

Loyalty Card Guide

Claim Cashback

TopCashback is my favourite cashback website! They allow you to earn money whenever you shop online. Retailers pay TopCashback commission for referring you to their website & then they pass this commission back to you as ‘cashback’. I’ve earned over £300 from TopCashback over the past year just for doing my shopping through them!

It’s always worth checking to see if you can earn cashback by booking your cinema tickets in advance!

Check Groupon for Deals

Groupon provides deals from restaurants, bars & cinemas in your local area looking to promote their products. I’ve got discounted deals ranging from 30% – 70% off the normal price! It’s really worth checking before you book your ticket! Right now they’re offering a Outdoor Film Screening Experience with Free Popcorn and a 20% discount in my local area!

Free Snacks!

We all know that snack prices are ridiculous in the cinema – so we usually sneak our own in! Shopmium offer unbelievable deals on food & drinks. There’s usually always a free snack or 2 on there! You’ll also get a tub of Nutella (the perfect movie snack am I right) just for signing up via the link below.

Don’t want to sneak your own snacks in? Hold is an app that rewards students for not touching their phone. You get 10 points every 20 minutes that you keep off your phone. Once you reach 60 points you can redeem your points for a free regular popcorn at Vue. They also have free drinks that you can redeem at your local cinema too!

How much have you managed to save at the cinema? We watched Incredibles 2 for £5 (with meerkat movies) and claimed a free regular popcorn (using the hold app) while we were there! Cheap date? I think so.

  • The cinema can be so expensive these days! I love the idea of recreating the experience at home. That way you can rewind it if you happen to miss something!!

  • I love the idea of having the cinema in your home with Netflix, microwave popcorn and maybe tortilla chips with avocado dip. I also like to get out and enjoy the movies too. I will be looking in my local area to see if they have discounts.

  • Wow, this is so great, thanks for this post! I’ll definitely be using free preview screenings and groupon! I didn’t even know you can use tesco clubcard points for cineworld vouchers!! Another way I save at the cinema is watching films at the Barbican (a performing arts centre in London) they have memberships that you can sign up to, for example, I’m signed up to the Young Barbican membership which is completely free. With this membsership, I can watch the films that they’re playing for only £5!
