5 Ways to Make Your House Work for You
Forget working from home, you could be making your home work for you!
If you own your own home, there are numerous ways you can leverage your property to earn more money, some will be easier than others, but chances are, if you’re looking for a bit of extra income, there will be at least one option that works for you.
1. Rent your drive
You might not believe it, but there are plenty of people out there looking for a safe place to park their vehicle, which means that, if you have any spare drive space, you could make a bit of extra money by offering it up to them. You’re likely to get more demand for this kind of thing in big cities and tourist areas, but you’ll lose nothing by advertising the space, so why not give it a try?
2. Rent a room
If you have a spare room, you could earn up to £7,500 tax-free by renting it out, and help out someone who’s looking for a safe place to live at the same time. If you don’t have a spare room currently, extending could be an option because not only will it allow you to earn a rental income, but it will also boost the value of your property in the long term. Talk to your mortgage company about the possibilities of renovation, including remortgaging to cover the cost, and before you know it, it will start paying off.
3. Rent storage space
If you have a shed, garage or attic space that you are not currently using, why not make a little extra on the side by offering it up as rental space? As we all accumulate more stuff, storage units have become very popular, and if you can offer your own storage solutions up at a competitive rate, there is no reason why you could not bring in a modest income with pretty much no effort at all.
4. Grow and sell
If your home is lucky enough to be surrounded by a patch of land, a novel way to turn your home into a moneymaker would be to grow flowers, bonsai trees or even fruits and vegetables that you can then sell on to the local community or even online. Organic fruit and veg can bring in a pretty price as can rare flowers and ornamental bonsai trees, so this could be a really good way to fill up your piggy bank fast.
5. Use it as a film location
Film companies will pay sometimes hundreds of pounds per day for the use of interesting properties that they can film in. Of course, your property will probably need to be something special, and you’ll only get work when there’s a particular need for the kind of property you have, but there’s nothing to lose by registering with an agency. Just bear in mind that having a whole film crew and actors in your home will be pretty disruptive for the duration, which is why it pays so well.
Your home really could be your fortune.
