Cheap or free hobbies to do in your spare time

People spend the majority of their disposable income in their free time. You rarely get the chance to spend it during the working week, besides on coffees and lunches, so it can be tempting to go all out on weekends or days off to make you feel like you’re living life. However, this isn’t always the best thing if you’re planning for the future. Reckless and excessive spending can demolish your chances of saving which is absolutely essential for life’s big milestones. As such, we’re going to delve into some free or cheap hobbies that you can do in your spare time to help you increase your saveable income or just lower your monthly expenses. Let’s go!

Cheap or free hobbies to do in your spare time

Exercise

A universally popular hobby is exercise – for plenty of reasons. Not only is it a cheap or even free way to pass the time, but it has amazing impacts on your mental and physical health too. In most cases, all you need is a pair of trainers and some activewear to start running or walking. The great thing about these activities is that you can do them almost anywhere and without paying a thing. You can also go to the gym or swimming pool if you’d rather, but they usually cost more for monthly memberships.

Join a sports team

Many would assume that joining a sports team is for young people only or that it would cost a fortune to get started. Both of those views are true for some sports more than others, but certain sports can be a great way to sink your time into something without having to pay a load of money. There is also a great social element to sports teams, which is invaluable. Take village cricket, for example. Clubs usually require a small fee for joining but once you are part of the team, you can enjoy many hours per week of training and matches. There are value options when it comes to cricket clothing and equipment, or you can borrow someone else’s gear until you know you’re going to play more.

Writing, drawing and painting

Creative activities are also a great way to kick back and relax without spending too much during your downtime. You can start with as little as a pencil and some paper, a computer you already own or buy some canvases and paint which are relatively inexpensive. This is another good option in terms of value for your money because you can enjoy hours and hours without having to spend more.

Blogging is my absolute favourite hobby and I’ve been very lucky to turn it into a side hustle too.

DIY

Lots of people are obsessed with making home improvements on a budget and for good reason! It can be very exciting to take on a DIY project where you can be adding value to your property and saving money on hiring a professional at the same time. Certain projects like painting walls, fences or door frames won’t require much investment but can be very satisfying. Even if you spend a bit more on supplies, it won’t be wasted money because it should be making a real difference in your life.
