8 Simple Ways to Increase Your Income
Guest post from dontworkanotherday.com
For most people, we always want more of the good things and less of the bad. And that’s true when it comes to your money. We typically want to increase our income while lower any debt we might have to secure our financial future.
Where most people get held up is finding actionable ways to increase their income. People might become discouraged by how hard it can be. In this post, I’ll explain 8 simple ways you can give your income a boost! Let’s get started.

Get Your Hustle On
Side hustles seem to be the trend of the past decade and for good reason. They can be an excellent low-risk way to increase your income while working a full-time job as well.
Some of my favorite side hustles include:
- Becoming a mystery shopper
- Flipping furniture for profit
- Making money with a 3D printer
- Driving for a ride-hailing service
- Sell candles from home
While none of these methods are a “get rich quick” scheme, you might be surprised how much money you can make. There are many people who have managed to turn their side hustles into a full-time position.
Learn New Skills
In some fashion, your skills define your monetary worth. The more skills you acquire or the more advanced your skills are, the more you can offer to a company in need.
Because of this, learning new skills is a great way to increase your income and with today’s technology, you can learn a skill from just about anywhere for a very small cost.
For instance, Studocu is an excellent resource for individuals looking to learn new skills and advance their careers. From business and finance to IT and coding, it offers an extensive collection of study materials and resources.
Some of my favorite ways I’ve learned new skills are:
- YouTube
- Books
- LinkedIn Learning
What skills should you learn? In short, it depends on your current skills and desires. For those who enjoy working with computers, learning web design or development would be a worthwhile skill. For those who like manipulating numbers, learning the basics of accounting might be right for you. Take some time to explore your options and know your desires before deciding on which skill is right for you.
Find a New Job
There’s no doubt finding a new job can increase your income. And it doesn’t hurt to see what’s out there, even if you aren’t interested in leaving your current position.
Check out the job boards to see who’s hiring and what you could be capable of earning.
Word of warning: try not to “job hop” or go from job to job within a couple of years. I would recommend staying at your current company for at least one year before considering a new position to make more money.
Ask for a Raise
Going hand-in-hand with finding a new job is asking for a raise. If you’ve been a reliable and productive member of the company you work for, there’s a decent chance you may be eligible for a raise.
You should do your research beforehand to estimate the amount of your raise. This will help you when negotiating your offer.
Negotiating for a raise can be intimidating but here are some tips to help better your chances.
Switch Careers
Not feeling the mojo in your career anymore? Good news! Switching career paths can help you to make more money. But it will come with a cost.
Depending on your career choice, you might be forced to further your education or learn new skills. You should always evaluate the costs of furthering your education when deciding to switch careers.
Invest in Passive Income Streams
Passive income, or making money passively, is one of the hottest trends in personal finance. Why? Because of its ability to make you money without requiring much ongoing work.
The key is that it can take a significant amount of cash or work upfront to generate. For example, if you plan to generate passive income with a rental property, you’d need to first purchase the property, which could require a large amount of cash. However, there are some options that do not require much money to get started. Check out a few examples below!
Examples of Passive Income Streams
There are hundreds of potential passive income streams. Here are a few examples to get started.
- Rental properties
- Dividend investing
- Advertising with your car
- High yield savings accounts
- Blogging
Offer Freelance Work
For many skilled workers, there is always the opportunity to make more money by offering freelance services. This essentially means offering your skills to companies in addition to your full-time job. Because some companies may not have the need or bandwidth to hire someone full-time, they might opt to hire a freelancer to complete specific tasks.
Some freelancers may eventually transition their work into a full-time job if they can attract enough work.
Increase Your Workload
If you’re working a position that is paid hourly, one of the simplest ways to increase your income if by working longer hours. While this isn’t available for everyone, you might consider working a second job as a way to give your income a boost. Even if it’s just a few hours each week, this can add up over the course of the year.
Over the past few years I’ve accepted overtime, found part-time work and even started my own business to boost my income.
Conclusion: How Will You Increase Your Income?
Increasing your income is by no means simple. It will take time, dedication, and for some maybe even luck to accomplish. Does this mean you should give up? Absolutely not.
Increasing your income can completely change your financial future for a lifetime and is an extremely worthwhile investment.
