Is Buying a Motorbike a Smarter Commuting Investment Than a Car?

Not many cities outside of London let you commute every day easily to your destination. When you work in town, you often need to drive because public transport options are not sufficient. Commuting is one of the biggest pain points when you are managing a household budget.

As more and more British offices are asking staff to come back to the office and reduce home-based work alternatives, it becomes obvious how expensive commuting can be. While there may not be an option for remote work, there may be one for a better city commute vehicle. What if it was your car that made city commuting more expensive than it needed to be? It’s one of the reasons why many Britons are switching to motorbikes

The Price Difference

How much does a car cost? The price can vary greatly, depending on model, size, and also whether it is brand-new or second-hand. However, it is very uncommon for the average household to purchase a car, even a used one, without car financing. When you sign for car financing, this can increase the overall financial pressure of managing your household budget.

On the other hand, you can find simple motorbike designs from £2,500 brand-new, and they get considerably cheaper second-hand. For someone looking for an affordable commuting vehicle, there is a clear appeal.

Naturally, you can also find luxury motorbikes, but ultimately, when you are working on a budget, luxury vehicles are unlikely to be on top of your list.

What About the Daily Running Costs?

Upfront purchase costs are one thing, but how about day-to-day expenses?

Fuel efficiency is an area where motorbikes clearly take the lead. Comparatively, they are more  fuel-efficient than cars, especially in city traffic, as they don’t need to stay idle in queues the way cars do. Fewer stop-start moments mean that you are not wasting as much fuel on your daily commute.

Additionally, it’s worth comparing insurance costs. A motorbike insurance is much more affordable than car insurance for a variety of reasons:

  • Lower repair costs
  • Lower overall value
  • Less liability risk for property damage

Maintenance costs tend to be lower as well, as you’re working with fewer parts and smaller engines. Naturally, that’s not to say that bikes are maintenance-free, but servicing and repair costs are budget-friendlier.

Reducing the Cost of Commuting Stress

When you commute to work every day, you know how stressful unpredictable traffic can be. Whether it’s poorly signed roadworks or sudden accidents, it’s easy to get stuck in a traffic jam. Motorbikes can filter through traffic a lot more easily, which means you are less likely to arrive late.

Besides, when it comes to parking, it can be tricky to find a space in a busy city for your car. Ultimately, not every office has a car park, and there may not be any car park facilities close to your workplace. So, that means having to park on the street. This is where the motorbike is definitely a winner, because even if you can’t find space for your car, finding space for a motorbike is a lot easier.

More and more Britons are making the decision to swap the car for a motorbike. While this may not be the best option for everyone, it is certainly worth considering the financing benefits of a bike vs. a car.
