My Top Tips for Entering Holiday Giveaways

Finding and entering competitions is a hobby of mine. In the past few years, I’ve been lucky enough to win some amazing gadgets, cash prizes, and holiday giveaways. If you’re new to the world of competitions and giveaways you’ll be pleased to know that someone does win and you can improve your chances of being the lucky winner.

The first holiday I won was a trip for two to Berlin (including flights, a hotel, breakfast, and two brand new suitcases). I took my dad on the holiday and we had an absolute blast adventuring around Berlin. The second holiday I won was a 7-day interrailing pass which included travel and accommodation through Lille, Bruges, and Brussels. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to travel to 4 different cities thanks to competition wins.

If you would like to increase your chances of winning a holiday there are lots of tricks to learn. In this post, I share my top tips on how to find, enter and win travel competitions and holiday giveaways.

Keep Entering

It can be easy to get discouraged when you enter competitions without any luck. But the more you enter, the more likely you are to get a win. I aim to dedicate at least a couple of hours a week to entering competitions.

You can find Holiday Competitions across the internet, on social media, and on promotional print (such as billboards or packaging). The two holidays that I won were found on Facebook and Instagram. Find more competitions to enter by joining competition groups, following accounts that regularly run competitions and by checking common giveaway hashtags such as #WinItWednesday, #FreebieFriday, #Giveaway, and #Win.

Due to most social media algorithms, the more competitions you enter the more competitions will appear on your news feed. So if you’re looking to enter more make sure to keep engaging with the ones you see and following other accounts that enter lots of giveaways.

Auto-fill is your friend

Most web browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari) feature an option to remember your details and fill them in automatically. So next time you type the first few letters a suggestion should appear making entering competitions much quicker.

On Google Chrome go to the top right and choose ‘Settings’ from the dropdown menu. Under ‘Autofill’ select ‘Addresses and more’ and turn the ‘Save and fill addresses’ switch to on. You can also add, edit and delete addresses here.

In Safari click on ‘Preferences’, which is located in the top right-hand corner of your screen, then click on ‘AutoFill’. To turn AutoFill off or on, select the information you want to include in AutoFill and deselect the rest.

Enter Extra-effort Holiday Giveaways

Lots of people are lazy, so anything involving extra effort attracts fewer entries. Some giveaways require creativity in the form of writing a poem or demonstrating your photography skills.

Try your luck – you might be the only entrant! You’ll get bonus points for being creative, involving all the family and keeping it light hearted.

There are a whole host of competitions for amateur writers, poets and photographers so if you’re particularly skilled in any of these areas make sure to give it your best shot at entering these competitions.

Keep your emails organised

Once you’re comping regularly, it’s likely that you’ll receive dozens of emails making sure that your inbox is tidy will ensure that you don’t miss any winner announcement emails.

Avoid joining newsletters where possible, unsubscribe from those you no longer want to receive, and NEVER tick boxes to share your details with a third party.

You could also set rules up in your mail software that flag any emails with ‘Congratulations’ or ‘winner’ in them. And make sure to search your junk folders every few days in case a winning email has been missed.

Some compers set up a separate email for entering competitions, but if you decide to do this make sure that you don’t name it something obvious like “comper101” as brands are unlikely to pick an obvious comper to win.

Check the Terms & Conditions

In most cases, you’ve got nothing to lose by entering (free) competitions. But when it comes to holiday giveaways that involve travel, failing to understand the terms and conditions could be expensive.

Sometimes holiday-related prizes don’t include flights, transfers, or food. These are all important factors to consider when entering travel comps. Of course you can always turn down the prize if you later realise that there is a large cost involved.

It’s also important to check the terms and conditions to make sure that your entry is valid. Often competitions will involve answering a question correctly, signing up for a service, or being a member of a certain club.

Have fun with it

Don’t take it too seriously – comping can be a fun hobby. I enjoy finding and entering giveaways and the prizes are a bonus!

Stay positive, be friendly, and congratulate others on winning. It’s usually when you least expect a win that you’ll get one.
