Independent contractors complete this work. If you’re looking for a work-from-home side gig then this might just be the place for you! Read on to find out more about this flexible work provider.
Is Appen Legit?
Yes. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Sydney Australia, Appen now operates in 130 countries and employs up to 400,000 work-at-home contractors.
Appen is a technology company that works with a range of well-known companies to improve the customer experience of eCommerce, Search Engine, Voice Recognition, Social Media and more. Their aim is to improve the world of technology. They do this through hiring flexible temporary workers (you) to perform online tasks like speaking phrases into a microphone or rating social media ads and search engines.
BECOME A SOCIAL MEDIA EVALUATOR
The most common job on Appen is the Social Media Evaluator. An SME provides feedback on ads, news feeds, and search results on social media platforms.
Requirements: Access to a computer and/or access to a smartphone & to have an active social media account (Facebook seems to be the most popular project requirement).
Working Hours: You’re usually required to work for 1 hour a day for at least 5 days (a week). But it’s up to you when you complete this hour of work.
Payment: $14/£10 an hour.
BECOME A search engine evaluator
Your main responsibility as a search engine evaluator is to filter search engine results based on different criteria (you’ll be given details of this in your project brief).
Requirements: Access to a computer and/or access to a smartphone.
Working Hours: You’re usually required to work 20 hours a week, but it’s up to you to choose when you want to work these hours (max 5 hours a day).
Payment: $14/£10 an hour.
OTHER APPEN PROJECTS
Once you’ve signed up, you will have access to the open projects tab. Projects are updated regularly so if there isn’t anything for you right now it’s worth revisiting regularly. You’ll be able to see the project details, workload and payment before applying. There are tons of other projects available including:
- data annotation
- speech collection
These projects aren’t as long term as the search engine and social media roles (exact requirements and working hours are less predictable for these tasks). These make great part time weekend work/side hustles. Some projects will require you to complete additional training or download apps and get your friends and family involved with the data collection.
The most common question that I get asked is how much does appen pay. Payment can vary depending on the project and job that you sign up for. The average job pays around $14/£10 per hour. In most cases, you will need to record your hours and submit an invoice at the end of each month.
You receive payment monthly (within 30 days of your invoice) through your preferred payment method. You can choose to be paid directly into your bank or via your PayPal. As you will be working as an ‘Independent Contractor’, you will need to take care of your own taxes (after you’ve earned more than your £1000 personal allowance), recording all your income and registering as self-employed.
HOW TO APPLY
Sign up for an Appen account by visiting the link below. Select your country and language. Additionally, you will be required to take and pass a qualification exam to be accepted as an independent evaluator. Once you’ve completed and passed the exam you’ll have access to more upcoming projects.
For each project, you receive a brief of your working requirements. In some cases, completion of a qualification is a requirement. You are not paid for any training you complete. But you will start earning from the moment you complete the training.
Some of the Appen reviews online are quite negative. My personal experience as a search engine evaluator with Appen has been great. I completed my first test and received an email within a week to confirm my place on the project. Yeah you might not qualify for many projects, but you not get every job you apply for. A project might not last long, but that’s the downfall to online work. I’ve qualified for 2 projects and earned over £4000 (within a year) from them.
